Everything you need to know about macro lenses
What is a macro lens?
A macro lens is a lens that captures small objects at a size equal to, or larger, than the object itself. This lens type is therefore ideal for macro photography, which primarily entails close-up images of, e.g., insects, people or flowers. Depending on the focal length, some models are also suitable for photographing animals from a greater distance.
Minimum focusing distance
These small objects can be captured in their true size thanks to the extensive range of macro lenses. This isn't possible with other lenses as the focusing distance far exceeds the required distance. Because macro lenses boast a short focusing distance you are in fact able to enter this fascinating world.
Image stabilisation
You'd like to capture microscopic objects using a macro lens, which is why it is vitally important camera shake doesn't impact the quality of your photos. To achieve this, various lenses feature technology that ensures your image is stabilised as and when needed. Should your lens not have stabilisation, a monopod is the answer.
Autofocus
The autofocus is key in macro photography, as is focus precision. Moreover, the speed of this process is crucial too, as you have to be quick when capturing moving objects. As such, some lenses feature systems that cover speed, precision and quality.
